Drinking Tea and Singing around the Fire

I learnt this song around the fire, probably already in 1961,
but I don't remember to have heard anything but the first stanza.
Now, when I immersed myself in it,
I wondered about the difficulty of the text
by such a famous poet and songwriter as Haim Hefer.
I resented the word "sacrifice" in the first stanza
and I am sad about the sadness of the last two stanzas.
But since the song well conveys the experience
of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Israeli soldiers in 60 years,
and since the "finjan" is an item, which joins the two peoples in this country
(though in the orginal Arabic it means the small coffee-cup and not the coffee-can, as in Hebrew)
I decided to insert the song in my 2007 Song-game.

The 16th Program presents a magnificent confusion (bilbul) of different ethnic backgrounds of Israelis, just as I, Rachel, so much cherish

Read from right to left

Avi: "When you want to escape something you feel, you smile ---- but it doesn't matter ---
I only got cherries --- I'm trying to make cheese-buns"
The judges: "What? Cheese-buns? Did you ever make such?"
Avi: "No, I made a dough that is similar, but not with the same things, something very different called 'Monna' "

"Perhaps you know that, it's a dish which- in our homes - breaks the fast of Yom Kippur"
Chaim to Roshfeld aside: "Would you have believed that Avi makes a sweet dish? "
Roshfeld: "I'm always afraid of baking something in so short a time"
to Avi: "You only have 55 more minutes. Remember, you can also - you are already a senior competitor - make something else and then choose"

Roshfeld imagines, what he would cook with these ingredients. Chaim: "What are you talking about ....
He brings you a dish of fasting, of breaking the fast. He never confronted himself with sweet things like he does now in this assignment "

Elihav (who has to cope with Avi's basket)

"Avi?" "What!" "What did you want to do with these eggplants? " "Do you now what Tanzia" [I don't know how this is pronounced] is? " "Yes"
Elihav aside: "I and Avi, we are twins--- we are from the same background"
Elihav to Avi:
"the only thing that's missing here, is a picture of Baba Sali, and I and you would have gone for a trip to Marrakech ."
[this is also the town in Morokko, where the parents and the two elder brothers of Efrat, Immanuel's wife, were born]

Elihav: "I look at all these ingredients and that is like tossing me first of all to the marble-sink of my grandmother....."

Immanuel asks Yossi's advice concerning that meat, the "calf-almonds"

"You have to boil them", "Can I do this with lemon?" "Try, yes"

"I remember that someone explained to me, that they have to be cooked in boiling water with vinegar"

He runs to Elihav, from whom he "inherited" his basket:
"Tell me, the almonds - how did you intend to peel them without vinegar?"
"I have no possibility to peel them without vinegar --- now that I look, ... "

"I understood that Elihav missed to take vinegar from the pantry and I decide... what to do? to improvise with lemon. I still don't want to give up on those almonds"
He turns to Yossi again: "How much time should I put the almonds before peeling ? How much boiling?" - " 10-15 minutes".

Shai is struck by the critique of Roshfeld and Chaim: Nothing will be acceptable of what he planned and already cooked

"Be careful... you still have enough materials... enough time, think about what you can do"
Shai: "Roshfeld simply undermind my self-confidence, simply undermined my....

"Selfconfidence , that's not something that's selfunderstood for me....
In think until three years ago I couldn't finish an entire sentence without stammering or without loosing the line of my thinking."

"That's why I always live with this feeling,

Shai does not let himself be defeated.
"This critique woke me up to other directions and opened my imagination to additional things.
It's true it's not pleasant to hear these things,
but I think, someone who doesn't take this to a place of ego, gains a lot by this
... I planned something and I did something else and suddenly I found myself preparing a third dish.....
It's very important for me to succeed, after the sequence of my failures and I'm all alert and ready.

Iris often causes herself to laugh, says Chaim, and she agrees.
They warned her, that someone was "betraying" her.

She stops Immanuel who is running by:
"Come have a look, do you have a minute? Look at the fish, does it betray me?"
Immanuel: "The noise is excellent, but cover it!"
"Ah, that's what he meant when he said he is betraying me. He meant the lid of the pot!"
To Chaim and Roshfeld:"He is no longer betraying me!"

When the judges visit Yossi,
they feel sad about his lack of energy.
It seems,
that Yossi still hasn't forgiven them,
for having taken away his basket
with the ingredients for "Imma's Dish".

And he somehow feels angry
about Immanuel,
whose basket was forced on him:
What to do with "cheese and fruits"?
"Chocolate with sweet pine-nuts, as if...

"I think I went crazy,
but that is amazing"

Countdown: 10 - 9 - 8 - 7 -.....

Michal: "We tested your skill of improvisation,
for you had to work with ingredients which you may not have been familiar with in your "home-cooking"

Immanuel is the first, who is called to present his dish

"I admit that the calf-almonds ---
-I never in my life busied myself
with those up to this day"

Michal:
" And despite of this you chose
to go exactly for those?"

"I learnt it while doing it".

"Well, let's hope, you succeeded - Let's taste it"

"Yatzaa lekha tov!" [you succeeded]

"Thanks"

Michal:
"This is a very good example for some kind of wisdom of housewifes,
an intuitive wisdom which is in their knowledge that passes on from generation to generation.
They take a very important culinary step which you do have. [Oct. 26: I don't understand what I quoted here]
You didn't busy yourself with that. And you know to walk on the right path.
They are not perfect, your calf-almonds ..... but ... There is much wisdom in your dish."

Eyal:
"Immanuel, there is very great delight in eating this.
Only when I taste this, and the chestnut is placed next to the calf-almonds
and together they give some kind of depth that's bigger than the depth of each of them,
[ I understand that ] these are really relatives, who relate to each other with gentleness.
I understand, how much the chestnut had been missing the calf-almonds in its life.
And there is, despite the depth and the flavors' summerness, lightness and freshness."

Roshfeld:
"that's a very good dish,
the only flaw is that it's a bit too greasy
Nobody related to the fact that you made pasta. [Immanuel laughs]
This is already self-understood and --- I love this
My respect !"

Through this assignment they had to come in cooking contact with the homes of other Israelis.
The joy which I always feel when I watch the "seventy nations" in the one State of Israel,
can be expressed by two paper images, which fell into my hands today [Sept. 21, 2011]:
the colors of the trees in autumn (in two days will be Equinox!)
and the colors of the women, their skin and their traditional clothes,
who came to the UN Conference on Women in Nairobi on August 5, 1985
