When I finally immigrated to Israel
with my son Immanuel - by plane,
we first lived in Haifa,
for the simple reason,
that my equipment would arrive there at the port.
My newly wed husband,
who had divorced only 2 months earlier,
and with the divorce had lost his house,
his orange plantations
and his administrative job in his village,
had not yet found a new job,
so we didn't know where we would live.
One single image exists of that quite difficult time,
and ....... this song!

It was a new hit,
and I could hear it from every radio
in the neighboring flats.

Today, 47 years ago,
the story with Rafael began in Jerusalem...

Also today, 12 years ago,
the Israeli Prime-minister Jitzhak Rabbin was murdered by a Jew during a peace-rally....

The 16th Program presents a magnificent confusion (bilbul) of different ethnic backgrounds of Israelis, just as I, Rachel, so much cherish

Read from right to left

Eyal:
"You remained seven, and each of you has already .....

the matter is not a dish on a plate.
it's a matter of courage and daring

[a Jewish term: "On the Day of Shabbat, a person has an 'extra soul,']
Chaim:
"Do you remember the food of Imma?
All the body clings to this with longing, with love, with tears"

Comment of Immanuel's mother: This "longing" is foreign to me,
though my mother was a diet-cook in hospital before she married,
and capable of what rare raw materials there were after the war,
to somehow turn into food for the hungry mouths of her 3 children.
Neither do I see such longing in my own children,
though I was a good cook and towards each Eve of Shabbat and Shabbat
terribly pressured, projecting on my husband, that he wanted me
to always be a 'masterchef' and invent ever new, creative dishes.
On Sunday mornings I sighed with relief:
'Before me are 5 days without needing to be pressured by cooking....'

"We want you to cook the dish which you ate in the house of Imma,
BUT it must be up-to-date!
And you have 5 minutes only to choose ingredients from the pantry. "
Of course, there would be "a twist" to this assignment, as they call this...

"Brandy, right?"

"My mothers hamburger is the most tasty in the world, it's as if I invite all the virgins to loose their virginity by kissing with the hamburger of Na'omi"

Jonathan: "What are you going to prepare? Immanuel ---- Iris ---- Shai ---- Avi ----"
And after each one shared the composition of Imma's dish and the imagined addition, Jonathan says:

"But you did not really think, that it's going to end like this, today, right?
Everyone moves to the stand and the basket in front of him
and cooks with what's in it and NOT the dish, that was intended for these ingredients
you have an hour and a quarter!"

Yossi [Moroccan background]

Yossi to the one, whose basket he had to take over:
"Immanuel! What did you do to me!"
"I did only fun to you, see the beauty of the plate you have, it's something.
Everything you can do with this"
Yossi: "everything I can do except what I wanted"

"First of all, I felt great disappointment.
Not only that this is not Imma, this is the Imma of Immanuel all of a sudden."
Immanuel: "Why do you have to sigh? Look, everything you can do here!"

"since I had an advantage [he excelled in Program 15],
but now this advantage has turned into a disadvantage.
"In our home fruits and cheeses
are not even included in desserts!"

"More than everybody I expected 'Imma's dish',

"Everything, everything"... "Dough with fruits"

Avi [Moroccan background] - Gili [British background]

Avi: "A British dish from Gili's grandmother,
as if .. where is the Britishness and where am I....
as if, how is this connected at all?"
Gili: "I really pity Avi for what he got in my basket."

Immanuel (German background)

"A surprising basket! ---- very! ---- there are materials with regard to which I don't know how Elihav wanted to compose them,
on the other hand there is -- there is a good basis for cooking --- I only must not take it to a place which is too safe" [as the judges would say]

"The competition is hard. Creativity abounds from every direction. It's already a tension on a level of not only 'come, let's do it well'.
It has to be special. Nothing can be done about that."

"there are good ingredients, there are chestnuts -----to cook only Bolonaise didn't feel to me special enough".
He shows what he calls "calf-almonds", "a product with which I had never worked and I felt it was right to take the risk"
(sorry, but I don't even want to explore what kind of meat that is...)

Iris [Italian background]:

"I got a basket with ingredients for a Moroccan dish, ---a dish, on which Yossi Azulai grew on -----that's so far from my Imma just now"

Shai [Morokkan background]:

"And suddenly I find myself in little Italy--- the best thing that's in me, is, that I can really make a meal from a button
So then I have to put this button in action now and to really make something from what I have."

"Guys, a quarter of an hour has passed, I hope you overcame the first shock"

Chaim to Avi: "Tell me the truth, thise smile, is this a smile of happiness or of..."
Avi: "No, this is called a smile of escape, do you know this?"
"Of escape? " "Yes"

Immanuel at the age of 10
His mother's letter to his teacher Tova about her shameful behavior against Levi, my "foster-child",
and against Immanuel, who tried to help Levi with the lessons and examinations.

In second grade the pupils started to learn Bible,
To begin with they celebrated "the Torah-Festival". Levi does not appear on any of the photos of that event.

[ I ended the letter - in Hebrew of course, with:] I expect your understanding for this letter - Rachel Rosenzweig

At the age of ten , Immanuel had a "vision" of how to make the World a better place....
I guarded two parts of what he noted.

Immanuel meets Esther in Heidelberg 1974

About 4 weeks after Immanuel's birth, Helen and I wanted to attend the lecture of Rabbi Geis at the Heidelberg University
We dared to leave the baby with little Esther. She - not yet 8 years old - wrote a letter, which we found hanging from the door handle:
"Dear Christa and Mama. I put Immanuel in my room, tied a thread to the pram and the other end to my foot, so I could rock him, so he would fall asleep. Greetings from Esther and from Schreihals screamer Immanuel."
When we talked about that thread, I sang the song about Maria rocking her baby with a "cradle-string" and asking Josef to help her. Esther, who by now had found out about the child's father yelled; "You have no Josef, you have a Rafael in Israel!"

Immanuel was born in Germany,
by a Christian-German mother.

At that time this mother lived in Heidelberg,
at first in a students' hostel,
but when pregnancy advanced,
she had to find another lodging.

As usual, there was an angel on the abyss.
Israeli friends had been asked
by a Jewish mother and father,
holocaust survivors from Poland,,
if they knew someone
who could teach their 6 year old daughter
Jewishness and Bible.
That's how Christa Guth ("good")
met little Esther Gutmann ["good man").
In the 7th month of pregancy
Helen Gutmann - with her husband
for ever hospitalized with Multiplis Sclerosis -
invited me to rent a room in their flat.
Till Immanuel's birth and after-
Esther was my companion angel.
