Dumb as I was, I tried to connect the word with what she knew: the holocaust. But she - hearing the word "shoah", immediately escaped into humor: "trua'ah?" [trumpet-call like on Rosh-Hashanah] she laughed, "No! you learnt about yom-ha-shoah! There is no yom-tru'ah, unless you want to call Rosh-Hashanah "yom hatru'ah"- "there you blow the shofar", she affirmed. But I, still dumb, wanted to go back to her question. She tried to side-track me again, and I asked: "don't you want to know about the"Partisanim". "No", she said harshly... then I got it: She didn't want to remember the Shoah.

As I said, I'm sorry for the confusion:
It's only now, after the end of the slow-motion sequence of the 10th program,
that I present the 7th program, the final audition for the men in the team


read from right to left

This is the final audition for the team of fourteen.
Today it will be the turn of the men -program 7- the next day the turn of the women -program 8..
The main assignment of the audition of the men was to base their cooking on
"a holy raw material, which saved mankind many times from annihilation.
Your assignment today is to create a dish of which the potatoe is the heart".
Ilan's memory of his time as a soldier, standing lonely at a hitchhike station at night:
"An Arab young woman approached me, she simply came and said; "Take it"
She let me taste a kind of bagel, which was filled with such a mint puree!"
Eyal: "What happened to the potato in the bagel there in the dark hitchhike station?"


Immanuel in the background will not be praised like Ilan
"The truth is, this bite, I imagined myself at the hitchhike station, a rainy day, right?
The mint somehow caused the potatoe to fly, you feel the potato."
"Magical. Thank you!"

Shimshon knew so much about the history of potatoes.
Yet he was not received into the team.

The judge Jonathan Roshfeld to Elihav:
"You have something,
which I can't remember to have met in the last years. "
Elihav, a creator of fashion for women,
will soon become Immanuel's best friend in Masterchef.

Roshfeld: "When I watched your process from the beginning,
I wished to once take you and let you fashion food for me"

"I remember very well from where I came-
that I cast out the drugs from my life!"

And again Immanuel appears in the background:
One of the judges says to Avi,
"This is perhaps among the 2-3 best dishes which I've eaten."
Avi, weaned from drugs and now weaning drug-addicts,
will become the other best friend of Immanuel.

"I must be focused, all the strength forward"

"Guys! there are only seven of you left!"



The "Dismissal-Assignment"


"We want you to cook the dish which caused you to fall in love with cooking"

"The moment I heard, that the assignment was to provide the dish through which I identified that I love to cook and that this is what I'll do, it fell on me
like a "bumm", I knew exactly what I would do."



"This is a tomato-soup
and it was
from my German mother
that I learnt it "

"In sixth grade, I had to choose a task,
like each of my siblings
to either wash the dishes or rinse the floor
or to cook"
[My comment: I don't remember that he was given this choice)

which my mother prepared for me...

to let himself be drawn
into the "Academic World"]

"In the end I became Jewish and became Israeli,
and now imagine those two grandfathers..."

which a colleague at "El-Al" had sent

Mika's Cousins visit me in Arad - August 27-29, 2011

Since I'm not with Mika at Shoham, nor she with me at Arad,
her cousins Yael and Itamar (my daughter's younger children)
as well as Arnon and Ayelet [my younger son's two children)
will appear on this and the following pages,
juxtaposted with their uncle, the Masterchef candidate.


The "little ones" will not leave their ipod for one moment - even in this very first moment of lounging together on my bed


But soon we'll go to the swimming-pool, to which they have such fond memories
