Wohlauf in Gottes schöne Welt

This German folksong, which we used to sing on all our hikes in my youth,
chose itself toward the end of the 2007 Song Game,
because it talks about nature, love and parting
"Whoever wants to wander, must not stay put, must not look backwards",
which is very much my Credo of "lekh-lekha".
But when I looked for the song on the Internet,
I discovered an additional reason for closing the Song-Game with this song.
The name of the author! "Wasn't that a Jew?"
I had just read, that at the beginning of the 19th century many Jews in Germany
converted to Christianity, in Berlin up to half the Jewish population.
And once they converted, and if they were rich,
they could even insert the title of nobility "von" in their name.

I finally put the name in Google and found a long article in Wikipedia

Julius von Rodenberg, actually Julius Levy, a German author and journalist.
born in Rodenberg, Niedersachen in 1831- died in Berlin, in 1914

When he had finished university in 1854,
Christian friends urged him to convert and change his name.
He succeeded to get permission from the local Kurfuerst (prince),
to change his name, without converting!
Later he married a Catholic..

Now look, how this story is connected to the last song of this year!.....

October 12, 2011, Eve of Succot, the new desert-song,
which starchild Gal Mor taught me recently:
She now discovered it on the Internet, though a bit different from her version.
Since it seems to be sung in all kinds of circles in Nature,
people omit and add and change and that's how it should be
.
it was created, while the author, Sharon Maor, lived at Mitzpe-Ramon, 1998,
perhaps he knew or even experienced my "Succah in the Desert
"

continuation of my experiences with my family on February 11, 2011

It seems, that here Mika agrees to her friend's "interfering" with her playing and singing a song
(was it the song of Rita, which Mika cherishes so much and which I learnt out from in May 2011?)

 



It turned out, that Mika's ardent invitation "please come for "Tu-biShvat"
was meant to make me replace her father at a community planting of trees.
Yet the ongoing rain, storm and cold forced the organizers to cancel the plan.
The happier we were, when the next day, on Shabbat, the sun broke through the clouds,
and - as if "in order to" follow the calling of this song - we walked "into God's beautiful world".


The scene is pretty, but it also reminds me of a big mistake I made:
I should not have allowed Mika to take her bamboo-stick! And more important:
I should have taken a backpack big enough not only for the snacks and the water,
but also for the jackets, which - most of the time - were not needed.

I am - after this weekend - absolutely clear, that I do not want to create a circumstance
where I need to admonish or educate Mika or any other kid or youngster or grownup.
Because I - and also Yael - thought, the girls should participate in carrying,
there was yet another chance for competing among each other,
and though in this case, Mika - after I left her to her own devices -
found this solution of holding the nylon bag on her bamboo stick,
both girls got soon fed up with carrying anything at all....

 



We climbed up the "Hill of the Siflulim", with a kind of succah on top,
to where I often tried to bring Mika before - sometimes with success.
But on this sunny spring day all of Shoham seemed to crowd above,
and we hurried down to a rocky place, where we were alone.

In the evening Mika was asked by her mother:
"How was it with your friend Elah"?
When Mika answered without thinking: "fun",
I quickly asked: "What was most beautiful in your togetherness?"
She jumped and said: "the tiul", i.e. the excursion into Nature.
